4 Easy Fixes So College Coaches Can Find Your Profile

A coach hears your name. Maybe you had a good game. Maybe another coach mentioned you. Now they want to see more.

They type your name into Instagram. Your page is called something your teammates made up in eighth grade. Your X account uses a different nickname. The profile photo is you from the other end of the gym.

You've given someone homework before they've watched a single play.

Make it easy to know they've found you. Your name, your face and your film should point to the same athlete.

Keep your name recognizable across accounts

Use the same handle on Instagram and X when you can, as close to your real name as possible. If your name is taken, choose a simple variation you can use on both.

Put your actual name in the profile's name field, too. You can keep the nickname in your bio. People who already know you will still get the joke. People trying to find you won't have to.

Think about someone who has only heard your name spoken. Could they recognize your account without asking a teammate which one is yours?

Give them a way to confirm it's you

Two athletes can share a name. Your sport, school or team, and grad year help a new visitor tell them apart.

Use a close-up profile photo where your face is clear. Then look at your accounts side by side. Would someone understand that the athlete on Instagram is the same person they found on X?

You don't need identical posts everywhere. Keep the basics consistent so each account feels connected to the same person.

Test the path to your film

Once someone finds you, where do they go next?

Open the link in your bio as a visitor. Check that it reaches your current film and that someone can tell which athlete to watch. If you've changed your handle, test the social links on your film profile and anywhere else you send coaches.

A useful link with an old username can send someone to the wrong place. Fix those connections together.

Search yourself before someone else does

Ask a teammate who doesn't follow you to search your name. Give them no hints. Have them find your Instagram, then your X account, then your film.

Watch where they hesitate. Did they pick a different athlete? Did they find an old account first? Did they need your jersey number to recognize the photo?

That hesitation tells you what to fix. Start there.

Your handle doesn't have to explain your whole brand. Your posts can show your game, your story and your why. The handle just needs to get people to the right person.

Tonight, search your name. Make the next step easy.
