Is Your Instagram Profile a Ghost Town? 5 Fixes

Someone found your profile. Maybe a coach. Maybe a fan who saw your highlights. Now they're looking at your page and deciding whether you're worth following. What do they see?

If your profile pic is a logo from a youth team you left three years ago, your bio is empty, and your last post is a repost from February, the answer is nothing. A ghost town. They came looking for a person and found an abandoned account.

Getting found is step one. What people see when they arrive is what turns a visit into a follow, a follow into a relationship, and a relationship into an opportunity. Here are five fixes.

Show your face in your profile pic

People follow people. A logo, a jersey number or a blurry gym shot tells a visitor nothing about who you are. Use a clear, close-up photo where your face is easy to see. It takes two minutes and it changes the first thing everyone sees.

Add one line to your bio about what makes you unique

Your bio shouldn't read like a roster. School, position and grad year are fine, but every other athlete has those too. Add one line that only you could write. A hobby. A goal. The thing you're known for off the court. That's the line people remember.

Make and pin an intro video

Thirty seconds. Say who you are, what you play, and what your page is about. Pin it to the top of your profile so it's the first thing every new visitor sees. Most athletes make people dig through old posts to figure out who they are. An intro video answers it instantly.

Post a hobby or interest outside your sport

Your sport shows what you can do. Everything else shows who you are. Cooking, fishing, music, your dog, whatever you're into. Coaches and fans connect with a person, and a person is more than a highlight reel. One post a week outside your sport is enough to start.

Put your email in your bio

If your profile does its job, someone will want to reach you. Don't make them DM you and hope you check. Put a real email address in your bio where a coach, a brand or a reporter can find it. Check it. Reply.

What this adds up to

A ghost town profile wastes every bit of attention you earn. These five fixes take one afternoon, and they turn your page from a dead end into the start of a relationship. That's what a brand is: the impression people get before they ever meet you.

Homework: open your profile like a stranger. Count how many of the five you can check off. Fix the rest this week.
